Two of the attorneys affiliated with the firm are CPAs and two have advanced law degrees (LL.M.) in taxation. The attorneys are frequent lecturers and authors on topics relating to taxation, estate planning, trusts, probate, business, and health care law. All five attorneys affiliated with the firm taught, or currently teach, college and/or law school courses in these areas. Firm attorneys are licensed to practice before the Kansas state courts as well as the Federal courts in Kansas and Missouri, the U.S. Tax Court, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
The firm is uniquely qualified to represent taxpayers before the Kansas Department of Revenue and Board of Tax Appeals, with over 40 years experience representing clients on multi-state income tax, sales/use tax and other state tax matters. Dave Newbery is the former Director of Taxation for the State of Kansas, a former member of the Multi-state Tax Commission Joint Audit Liaison Committee, former law professor of State and Local Taxation and former Kansas correspondent for the weekly publication, State Tax Notes.
B. J. Hickert is a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a national organization of approximately 2,600 lawyers elected to membership by demonstrating the highest level of integrity, commitment to the profession, competence and experience as trust and estate attorneys. He teaches estate and gift tax at Washburn University School of Law.
Jeff Ungerer won the Chief Industries, Inc. case at the Kansas Supreme Court which is currently the leading corporate income tax case in Kansas for the issue of whether divestiture gains should be classified as business or non-business income.
